housetrainingWhen it is time to pick up your new puppy, the best time will be in the morning. This will give it time to know the new place, before the loneliness of the night begins. If you are going by car, remember to take some old towels or newspaper and cover up your car, in case it get car sick. Animal may get stressed when moved from one place to another.

It is a good idea to keep the puppy inside until it has received its first house training, even if the will be living outdoor as an adult. It should have it own draught-free sleeping area, either in the kitchen or in the utility room. When you first bring a puppy home, a cardboard box, with a piece cut out in the front is ideal for bed. It’s a good idea to have a synthetic , washable, fur-like blankets inside for it to sleep on. Buy two so the dog always will have a clean and warm on, while the other is in the wash. When the dog grows older this can be replaced by a bed. If you plan to by a bed, there is a lot to choose from. A new veterinary-approved plastic bed with a special washable fur inside is to prefer. They come in a variety of sizes, and are not expensive.

Sleep and periods of rest is very important for a young puppy, so put it firmly in the box after each meal. It get excited of all the activities in companionship with you during the day.

At night, just before it’s night-time, you should play with the dog until it gets sleepy, and take it outside for a final elimination. The put it to bed, turn out he light and leave it to sleep. It may give some whimpers at first but will soon settle down. It’s a good idea to surround the bed with clean newspaper.

House-training can be achieved within a week, but it need patience and persistence. They should be trained where to defecate. The puppy should be taken to the same spot outside, first thing in the morning, after a meal or after a nap, and last thing at night. When you are at the selected spot, give the puppy a command like “Be quick!” and repeat this over and over again while it is sniffing. Once it is finished praise it with something like “Good boy” or “Good girl”. It is important to remember that this is a part of the training, and under no circumstances should you start to play with it on these occasions until it is finished with what the purpose is.

Normally the breeder will give you a diet and instructions for the puppy. You should try to follow these instructions and diet as close as possible. If you for some reason want to change the diet, then do it gradually. The general rule with small puppies is to feed little, but often – four times a day for an eight week old puppy. As the dog grows older you should increase the food but decrease the number of meal. At an age of one year it is normal to feed it only once a day.

It’s important to teach the dog what it is allowed to touch or where it is allowed to go. Short word like “No” is a hundred times better than a sentence like “Oh, Melba don’t do that” It’s responding more to your tones than the words.
